| South Africa is a country of multicultural background. The Khoisan people have lived in the region for millions of years and are believed to be the aboriginal people of the region. With the English and the Dutch arriving in the 16th century they created a challenge for the Portuguese who were already successfully navigating the Cape on their trading routes.
The country soon became a colorful melting pot of black and white. South Africa is also home to the largest Indian community outside of India. Also famous for its Boer wars, South Africa only became a Union in 1909. English and Dutch became the official lan-guages and Afrikaans wasn’t recognized as an official language until 1925.
