Johannesburg translates into John’s Town from the combination of its two founders by the name Johannes and “burg” from the Dutch meaning of village or town. The city experience mass migration due to the discovery of gold in 1886. Johannesburg was also the home for Mahatma Gandhi for over 20 years when he arrived via boat from India back in 1893. He established his own legal firm and later became a world known leader.
Today, Johannesburg is a city of good international standing.
